Jada Pinkett Smith’s awesome defense of Willow’s shaved head:

This is a world where women, girls are constantly reminded that they don’t belong to themselves; that their bodies are not their own, nor their power or self determination. I made a promise to endow my little girl with the power to always know that her body, spirit and her mind are HER domain. Willow cut her hair because her beauty, her value, her worth is not measured by the length of her hair. It’s also a statement that claims that even little girls have the RIGHT to own themselves and should not be a slave to even their mother’s deepest insecurities, hopes and desires.

They’re both beautiful so her her shouldn’t matter nor make a difference.

I wish I had a mother with similar views.  My mother hates Jada, and my parents are very misguided when it comes to gender roles and what won’t attract the opposite sex.

17 lies we need to stop teaching girls about sex

Fueled by outdated ideals of gender roles and the sense that female sexuality is somehow shameful, there are certain pernicious myths about girls and sex that just won’t die. That sex education in America has gaping holes doesn’t help much, either; in a recent Centers for Disease Control (CDC) report, just 6 out of 10 girls said that their schools’ sex ed curriculum included information on how to say no to sex. This lack of personal agency was reflected in a forthcoming study by sociologist Heather Hlavka at Marquette University as well, which found that many young girls think of sex simply as something that is “done to them.”

On Thursday, our school principal made an announcement about the dress code, and every rule and suggestion was directed at the girls. There was one half-assed comment where he tacked on the word boys at the end but I highly doubt any of the guys at my school will wear strapless shirts so there wasn’t a point. On Friday morning, everybody came to school and these posters were stuck on the walls and windows throughout the entire campus. The best part of it all is that the student body’s response to this protest has been totally positive. Go whoever this is. You rock, and I want to help with your next endeavor.
